WHAT IS IT

What is an IB Study coach?

The IB coach guides and supports students  through the academically demanding IB journey. Through the coaching process, carefully listening to each student and creating a supportive atmosphere, the IB students can be empowered in both academic and personal ambitions.

What does the service entail?

The IB Study Coach service involves working with the student on a 1:1 online sessions to develop Executive Functioning skills or, in IB terminology, Approaches to Learning (ATL). These skills encompass time-management, self-motivation, resilience, accountability, organization, thinking skills, reflection skills, and problem-solving.

How does this service benefit IB students?

My main objective is to guide and support students through the academically demanding IB journey, empowering them in both academic and personal ambitions. On 1:1 or group online sessions, I create a supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere where IB students develop Executive Functioning skills or, in IB terminology, Approaches to Learning (ATL), like time-management, self-motivation, resilience, accountability, organization, thinking skills, reflection skills, problem-solving among others.

What makes this approach successful?

The IB Study Coach is not just a coach but an expert in the IB framework with 25 years of experience and a sound understanding of the demands of both MYP and DP Programmes.

You can expect rigor and the highest standards of professionalism.

The IB Coach provides a safe and non judgemental place where there is no  creation of “mental labels, judgements or definitions on the other person.” (Eckart Tolle). In this space, empathy happens naturally and within this space, the student is encouraged to engage in self-reflection, attain self-knowledge, and navigate the terrain of making and learning from mistakes. I am there as a reflective mirror and not as a critic of their actions and that is why lies, mischief or deception do not occur because the student understands that the consequence of those actions will be directly manifested in their own life. Providing this listening space is crucial in the coaching process and I truly believe that this is "the greatest gift you can give someone" (Eckart Tolle)

The first  and utmost goal is to contribute to the betterment of the individual, to make a positive impact in their lives. This requires full commitment to address the individual needs and to perform to the highest capacity to be able to make that positive impact. My most important personal gain comes from seeing the IB student flourish, progress, gain confidence and eventually become empowered. I feel fulfilled when the student does not require my services any more.

The IB student will be responsible for creating their own reflection, realistic goals and personalised Action Plan as they answer reflective and guiding coaching questions during the session.  Most coaches find it difficult to do these with teenagers. There is a tendency of adults to tell teenagers what to do in the hope that they will follow those guidelines. For a teenager to learn life skills and flourish,  they need to have a safe space where they feel ownership of the process and of their decisions. It is this ownership that will motivate and challenge the IB student to push himself/ herself to do uncomfortable things (like trying a new strategy), to take the necessary risks (like participating in the school play) and to learn from their mistakes. I am able to provide that safe space were the IB student can try, fail, reflect and grow.

Coaching vs. Counsellor vs Private tutoring

Private tutor/teacher:

Let me see the test and let's see what we need to revise. Ok, I see, we need to practice some more exercises on functions. Let's do exercise 13 and 14 of page 56 of the maths book.

IB Study Coach:

Ok, it sounds like you are very frustrated with maths. Would you like this to be the goal of our session? If yes, what exactly would you like to achieve regarding maths for next week?  Ok, can you tell me what you did well on this maths test?  What strategies do you think were effective in getting some questions right?

If you do not know, it's ok, let's think of another subject you are confident in. What do you think you are doing that is working for that subject? Can these same study techniques be transferred to maths?  If yes, how? If not, imagine a friend going through the same as you are going. What advice would you give him?
